SAN DIEGO – March 9, 2010 – ElderHelp opened its third HomeShare office in the San Diego community of Clairemont, joining two other offices in North Park and Poway. The office will assist in matching pre-screened individuals seeking quality and affordable housing with San Diego area seniors.
“With the current economic recession, this much needed service has been a blessing to many San Diego individuals,” said Leane Marchese, executive director for ElderHelp. “The opening of our Claremont satellite office allows us to better service people who need a roommate to help pay their mortgage or to help around the house by grocery shopping or housekeeping. The program is especially beneficial to seniors who live alone and just want companionship.”
HomeShare is the only program of its kind in San Diego County. The program has been primarily funded by the San Diego Housing Commission for over 20 years but also receives funding from private foundations. HomeShare is an affordable housing program that focuses on maximum use of existing housing stock. It is much more than a “roommate matching service,” as found in the for-profit sector. HomeShare assesses the needs of two vulnerable populations and thoroughly screens those who wish to move into the home of a senior. The program then recommends matches, helps the parties set up rules and guidelines to establish mutual understandings, mediates conflicts and monitors the match over time. The program also differs from for-profit roommate matching services in that it works with low-income individuals and those who are unable to solve their needs for housing, may need additional income or are in need of help in the home.
Since its inception in 1982, ElderHelp’s HomeShare program has generated more than 2,000 successful matches. The program works through home providers (primarily seniors) who are willing to share the common living areas of their home offering a room to individuals (home seekers) needing affordable housing. There are three different ways a HomeShare match can take place:
Rental Program – involves a straight rent exchange in which a senior rents out a spare bedroom in their home;
Service Exchange Program – for home providers who may require some assistance. For a room, the home seeker will provide services such as housekeeping, cooking, grocery shopping and transportation; or
Hybrid Arrangement – where the home seeker pays reduced rent but also provides some housekeeping and/or care services as well.
