SAN DIEGO – Jan. 12, 2016 – Now in its eighth year, the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering is shaping up to be another week of entertaining, innovative science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) events and activities. San Diego County businesses, universities and professionals will offer thrilling events from March 5-13, 2016 where local families can engage in STEM education in neighborhoods near where they live and work. The highly anticipated EXPO DAY will occur on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at PETCO Park to kick off Festival Week.

The annual Festival Week features interactive demonstrations, hands-on activities and dynamic speakers to engage kids, families, and adults in STEM education. The expanded schedule of events is a major step in the festival’s dedication to showing how science and engineering opportunities are prevalent in local neighborhoods. “The festival continues to show its growth and our team is quite proud of this year’s very special activity line-up,” said Sara Pagano, managing director, San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering. “In particular, the new ‘STEM in Your Backyard’ events combine community and a passion for learning in five diverse San Diego neighborhoods. Plus, with our new 21 and up adult series, we are showcasing that the love of science doesn’t stop at any age.”

A program of the BIOCOM Institute, the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering aims to encourage and engage kids in STEM, and to inspire them to become tomorrow’s innovators. This festival, presented by Illumina, also helps continue to increase our region’s reputation of being a leader in the science industry. The goal of the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering is to show how science and engineering opportunities are in our own “backyard.”

New this year, festival organizers are expanding their event schedule to appeal to adults ages 21 and up. This new series, co-hosted by the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, offers adults an opportunity to continue their passion for STEM education. Also new is the STEM in Your Backyard series, which consists of mini versions of EXPO DAY in diverse communities across San Diego, including Vista, Barrio Logan, Chula Vista, City Heights and Downtown San Diego’s East Vilalge. This new series will provide local families of all backgrounds to experience the festival and STEM exhibits in diverse neighborhoods scattered around San Diego County.

The San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering is March 5-13, 2016. The festival kicks off with EXPO DAY, a daylong celebration at PETCO Park on Saturday, March 5, 2016. EXPO DAY is the Festival’s signature event, with more than 130 local businesses, corporations, and organizations providing interactive, hands-on science, technology, engineering and math exhibits and activities to budding K-12 science lovers. The fun continues with Festival Week (March 6-13) – eight days of learning, interaction and behind-the-scenes opportunities for grades kindergarten through 12th grade, and their families to ignite their passion for STEM education. All events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.

In 2015, 75,000 kids, parents, scientists, educators and community members participated throughout the week, plus more than 24,000 children, parents and STEM enthusiasts attended EXPO Day at PETCO Park.
