SAN DIEGO – March 23, 2011 – San Diego’s most popular culinary and social event, “Mama’s Day: A Mosaic of Taste”, returns to the Hyatt Regency La Jolla on Fri., May 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. An extraordinary culinary evening featuring more than 55 of San Diego’s premier chefs and restaurants, Mama’s Day is a major source of funding for Mama’s Kitchen, the only organization that prepares and delivers three meals a day, seven days a week at no cost to San Diego County residents affected AIDS or cancer.

Held the Friday evening before Mother’s Day, Mama’s Day 2011 features more than 55 chefs from San Diego’s finest restaurants, hotels, wineries and catering companies who graciously prepare delicious samples for nearly 700 attendees. Guests enjoy music, food and fun throughout the evening, as well as bidding on an extensive silent auction, a Super Silent auction, entering an opportunity drawing for outstanding prizes, and Wine and Vodka Vaults, each with a chance to win 18 bottles of premium wines or vodka. Sam “the Cooking Guy” Zien of Discovery’s Health Channel, is the Culinary Host for the evening and Vic Salazar of Vic Salazar Communications will emcee the event.

Alberto Cortés, executive director of Mama’s Kitchen, is grateful to the chefs and restaurants participating in the fundraising event. “They are helping us celebrate our past successes and raise money for our future successes by donating their food, services and time to Mama’s Day,” praises Cortés. Proceeds from Mama’s Day enable Mama’s Kitchen to cook and deliver hot, nutrition-specific meals free of charge to men, women and children affected by AIDS or cancer throughout San Diego County. Mama’s Kitchen served nearly 325,000 meals and had a total of 4,849 Mama’s Pantry visits in 2010.

Larry Rinehart, former owner of TK&A Custom Catering and current Mama’s Kitchen board member, is this year’s event chairperson. Originally chaired by Jeanne Jones and Jim Bowers, and founded by Tony Kopas of TK&A Custom Catering in 1991, the first Mama’s Day event was held under the name “An Evening at the Bistro.” At the time, it was the first restaurant tasting event of its kind, which is now emulated by many organizations today. Although Kopas died from complications of AIDS in January 1995, the TK&A Custom Catering team continues to support Mama’s Kitchen and its fundraising events, including Mama’s Day 2011. “Tony Kopas really set the bar for excellence in the San Diego catering community, not only by his work in the industry but in the way he supported his community,” says Lisa Richards, current owner, TK&A Custom Catering. “I, along with my TK&A Family, feel that the mission of Mama’s Kitchen is so very important to our community, and we’ve proudly supported Mama’s Day every year since 1991.” Mama’s Day 2011 is presented by Nordstrom, and hosted by Sycuan Resort & Casino; Union Bank is also a major sponsor of the event.

Tickets are just $125 per person, and $150 at the door. Premium VIP tickets are available at $250 per person, and include an exclusive party at the W Hotel on April 8, 2011. About Mama’s Kitchen

Mama’s Kitchen was founded in 1990 when volunteers from the AIDS Assistance Fund, a food bank for people with AIDS, discovered that many of their clients were becoming too ill to take care of themselves. They realized that a reliable home meal delivery service was needed to ensure that these individuals would continue to receive nutritious, life-sustaining food. In 2004, Mama’s Pantry was opened to provide individuals with HIV/AIDS who are able to prepare meals the opportunity to supplement their nutritional needs. Mama’s Kitchen has served over five million meals since it was founded and has never turned away a client who qualified for our services.  Our commitment to our clients remains unchanged. Today, the organization has expanded its service to San Diegans affected by either AIDS or cancer. Mama’s Kitchen provides three meals a day, for every day of the year, free of charge, to nearly 300 men, women, and children in San Diego County.
