Mama’s Kitchen Kicks-Off West Coast’s Largest Bake Sale

San Diego – Oct. 27, 2014 – Mama’s Kitchen, a nonprofit organization that delivers healthy meals at no cost to San Diego men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS or cancer vulnerable to hunger, presents their annual Mama’s Pie in the Sky Thanksgiving Bake Sale. The fundraiser, in its tenth year, officially began Monday, Oct. 6 and runs through Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014. Pie flavors are pumpkin, traditional apple pie, Dutch apple and pecan and are available for just $25 each. Pies can be purchased online via www.mamaspies.org or by calling (619) 233-6262.
All proceeds from this year’s pie sales directly fund thousands of free, hot and nutritious Mama’s Kitchen meals, which help ensure that no one living with AIDS or cancer will go hungry in the San Diego community. Hundreds of volunteers will take to the streets to sell the pies to friends, family and co-workers. Many of San Diego’s top pastry chefs, caterers, and bakeries such as Sycuan, Behind the Scenes Catering and more will donate traditional Thanksgiving pies for this annual Mama’s Pie in the Sky Bake Sale. Pies will be available for pick-up the day before Thanksgiving on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at more than 20 convenient Wells Fargo Bank branch locations throughout San Diego County and at Mama’s Kitchen in City Heights.
“Mama’s Pie in the Sky has become one of the community’s most talked about and supported fundraisers for Mama’s Kitchen,” said Alberto Cortés, executive director, Mama’s Kitchen. “Because of our tireless volunteers and amazing corporate sponsors, such as our presenting sponsor Wells Fargo, we are able to continue our mission and provide nutritious food for men, women and children affected by AIDS or cancer. Nothing means love more than nutritious meals, and that is what we hope to provide our clients throughout the year, but especially the holidays.”
This year, the popular “Love-A-Client” Pie raffle returns. Donate a pie to Mama’s Kitchen’s clients and automatically enter to win an iPad. The more client pies purchased, the more chances to win. Individuals and sales teams will also have opportunities to win prizes from generous sponsors.
Mama’s Kitchen has a goal of selling more than 5,100 pies during the six-week sales period, which will raise $129,000 and fund nearly 41,000 meals. Each pie sold provides more than eight home-delivered meals to a neighbor struggling with a critical illness such as cancer or HIV/AIDS. Individuals and teams are encouraged to volunteer to sell pies for a chance to win prizes from generous sponsors. Pie sellers are also encouraged to use their social media networks to promote their participation in Mama’s Pie in the Sky, as all sales funnel through their sales website. About Mama’s Kitchen
Mama’s Kitchen was founded in 1990 when volunteers from the AIDS Assistance Fund discovered that many of their clients were becoming too ill to take care of themselves. They realized that a reliable home meal delivery service was needed to ensure that these individuals would continue to receive nutritious, life-sustaining food. In 2004, Mama’s Pantry was opened to provide HIV/AIDS-positive individuals who are able to prepare meals the opportunity to supplement their nutritional needs. Mama’s Kitchen has served over seven million meals since it was founded and has never turned away a client who qualified for our services. Our commitment to our clients remains unchanged. Today, the community-driven organization has expanded its service to San Diegans affected by AIDS or cancer that are vulnerable to hunger. Mama’s Kitchen provides three meals a day, for every day of the year, free of charge, to approximately 350 men, women, and children in San Diego County.
