WHAT: The third annual Paws FUR Pink® San Diego 5K and 1-mile run/walk will be held on Sunday, Feb. 21 from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the NTC Park at Liberty Station. Paws FUR Pink is a regional dog-friendly run/walk for breast cancer and celebrates the unconditional love that is shared with our four-legged family members as well as the positive effects to an individual’s health this companionship and love brings.

The dog-friendly event provides community members an opportunity to walk or run to celebrate their own survival, to honor another survivor or in memory of someone who lost their battle to breast cancer. In addition to the 5K and 1-mile run/walk, participants can also enjoy a FURever Yours Expo and a PAWsitively Pink Costume Contest. There will also be Paws FUR Pink Awards that will be given in the following categories: Top Fundraising Team, Top Individual Fundraisers, Largest Team, PAWSitively Pink Costume Contest. All Participants will receive a commemorative custom medal and “Protect Those Puppies T-shirt”.

Part of the proceeds raised at Paws FUR Pink San Diego 5K and 1-mile run/walk will benefit Susan G. Komen San Diego, the County’s largest funder of free breast cancer treatments, services and support and is the only organization providing qualified women the free services they need for every step of the breast cancer journey. These services include free diagnostic mammograms, life-saving screenings, diagnostics, temporary financial aid for living expenses, meal deliveries, education, and more.  All money raised, five percent of the net proceeds and a $5 donation per 5K and 1-mile, will be allocated post event. Participants and their four-legged friends are also challenged to raise $125, the average cost of a Komen-funded mammogram. This year the fundraising goal for the Paws FUR Pink San Diego 5K and 1-mile run/walk is $8,000.

  • Elle Peji-DeVo, board member, Susan G. Komen San Diego, who can speak about the importance of fundraising to end the fight against breast cancer.
  • Lisa Scolman, founder, Paws FUR Pink can speak about why Paws FUR Pink supports Komen San Diego.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT:
  • We have come a long way in the fight on breast cancer. But there is still work to be done. In San Diego, six women a day are told the words “you have breast cancer” and unfortunately one woman a day passes away.
  • We know if caught early enough, the most common type of breast cancer is 99 percent survivable.
  • Komen San Diego is the County’s largest funder of free breast cancer services and support and is the only organization providing qualified women the free services they need for every step of the breast cancer journey.
  • Komen San Diego services include free diagnostic mammograms, life-saving screenings, diagnostics, temporary financial aid for living expenses, meal deliveries, education, and more.
  • Also, next to the U.S. government, Komen is the largest funder of breast cancer research in the world.
