County Supervisor Ron Roberts Delivers Sixth Millionth Meal for Mama’s Kitchen

**Fri., March 9, 2012 – interviews and meal delivery from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.**
WHAT: Mama’s Kitchen, a nonprofit meal delivery service for men, women and children affected by AIDS or cancer, will deliver its sixth millionth meal with the help of San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts on Fri., March 9. In Mama’s Kitchen’s 22 year history, they have never turned anyone away who was eligible for their services, nor maintained a waiting list.
WHY: Mama’s Kitchen prepares and delivers three nutritious meals a day, seven days a week at no charge to men, women and children affected by AIDS or cancer. In 2011, the organization delivered 347,690 meals to 572 home bound individuals in San Diego County. Mama’s Kitchen also operates Mama’s Pantry; a pantry service for low-income, HIV positive local residents. Every year, the organization is able to serve more than 1,300 people throughout San Diego County.

Please arrive at Mama’s Kitchen by 12:30 p.m. for interviews with County Supervisor Ron Roberts and Executive Director Alberto Cortés. From Mama’s Kitchen we will drive to the client’s apartment for the meal delivery at 1:00 p.m.
INTERVIEWS/VISUALS:
  • Mama’s Kitchen opened their new building in August 2011 with a state-of-the-art kitchen used to prepare hundreds of meals each week. We will have hundreds of bags packaged by several volunteers to be delivered that day.
  • Roberts and Cortés delivering sixth millionth meal to Mama’s Kitchen client, who can provide details on how Mama’s Kitchen has supported their health and recovery.  This client has been HIV positive since 1998 and has a walking disability so it was difficult for him to get to the store and prepare his own meals.
  • Supervisor Roberts, fourth district, can explain the impact the organization has made on helping those who are battling AIDS or cancer in San Diego County.
  • Alberto Cortés, executive director, Mama’s Kitchen can speak to the mission of the organization. He is fluent in both English and Spanish.
