SAN DIEGO – September 29, 2015 – As the nation’s older population continues to grow in size and diversity, state and national advocacy groups are looking for experienced leaders to help advise legislative policy. Two groups have found that leader in Paul Downey, CEO and president of Serving Seniors, a non-profit dedicated to helping seniors in poverty live healthy and fulfilling lives.

“Paul has led Serving Seniors for more than 20 years and held leadership roles with local and national aging initiatives,” says California Assembly Speaker Toni G. Atkins. “He’s brought extensive experience and passion to the Commission and I’m pleased he is able to continue serving for a second term.”

Downey’s reappointment to serve as a commissioner of the California Commission on Aging (CCoA) by Speaker Atkins demonstrates Downey’s work in San Diego to provide housing, wellness and social services to low income seniors is relevant to state issues. This is Downey’s second term in this role. The CCoA is the principal advisory body to the Governor, State Legislature, as well as State, Federal and local agencies, on issues affecting older individuals in order to ensure a quality of life for older Californians so they may live with dignity in their chosen environment. For more information on the CCoA, visit www.ccoa.ca.gov.

“Serving as a commissioner allows me to speak for the State’s neediest seniors and to influence policy on their behalf,” said Downey. “I am grateful to Speaker Atkins for her confidence in me and will strive to continue having a positive impact on the future of California’s seniors.”

Downey works with senior advocacy experts on a national level in his role as immediate past president of the National Association of Nutrition and Aging Services (NANASP).  NANASP supports the Older Americans Act, which has made it possible to provide a range of home and community-based services, such as home delivered meals, nutrition programs, in-home services, transportation, legal services, elder abuse prevention and caregivers support.

About Serving Seniors
Celebrating its 45th anniversary, Serving Seniors is a nonprofit agency dedicated to helping seniors in poverty live healthy and fulfilling lives. Founded in 1970, the organization creates collaborative partnerships to support their “wellness model,” which provides nutrition, health, mental health, advocacy, transitional housing for homeless seniors and permanent supportive housing. This safety net of services keeps seniors out of emergency rooms, reduces hospital days and delays and/or eliminates the need for long-term care. The agency has been skillfully led for 20 years by Chief Executive Officer and President Paul Downey. Downey is also the current president of the National Association of Nutrition and Aging Services Programs (NANASP) and is a commissioner for the California Commission on Aging. In 2014, Serving Seniors was recognized as the “#1 Best Place to Work” in the small company category by the San Diego Union-Tribune.
